Traditions
The administration has eliminated popular and important traditions:
Full Moon on the Quad
Secret Snowflake
Exotic Erotic
Eurotrash
Greek Week
-
University Offerings
Cardinal Nights, the university’s most popular and effective tool for a sober-friendly campus, lost much of its funding and agency
Weekend Marguerite Service was discontinued, as was the shopping line
Faculty with high satisfaction rates were fired for budget savings
Stanford drained the lake
-
Houses
Theme houses (French House, Casa Italiana, Slav, Haus Mitt)
Greek houses are constantly in flux
Co-ops will risk losing their houses starting in 2025
Houses have lost staff (row houses now only have 2 or 3 RAs) and agency (they no longer set their own menus, must jump through hoops to host events, and are asked to not have a culture that carries on beyond years)
-
Organizations
Band has had a figurehead installed, and over 30 “reforms” have eliminated all history and culture
Student organizations are unable to limit membership (e.g. through interviews)
The reorganization of the office of student engagement has added bureaucratic bloat without giving students the resources to navigate it
-
Safety
Student deaths are through the roof
Parties have shifted off-campus, unsupervised, and overcrowded
Rent-a-cops patrol white plaza for speeding bikers
Organizations who handle overdoses and alcohol poisoning properly by calling 911 now get months of probation in return
The open door policy has been eliminating, encouraging secret unsafe drinking
-
Student Events
Sororities and fraternities were almost entirely placed on probation over the course of 3 days, without due process. This eliminated most student parties on campus.
Greek houses are incentivized to not hold all-campuses, resulting in almost all parties having restricted guest lists and wristband-only entry
Eliminated theme houses no longer hold events such as Crepe Night, Oktoberfest, Pizzeria, which were popular alternatives to greek-hosted parties
“There were just 45 parties registered on campus during the first four weeks of the fall quarter, compared with 158 in the same period in 2019.”
-
Equity and Inclusion
As a result of university imposed restrictions, many parties are only open to those in greek life
The first open party of the year had a cover charge and was held a 30 minute Uber ride away from campus
Culture and identity based organizations face the same hurdles to hosting events as other organizations
-
Athletics
The university attempted to discontinue 11 sports teams
Club sports teams are on probation for unproven and unimportant allegations
Students don’t attend athletic events, partially due to administrative tightening of rules at games - students were kicked out of football games for standing on bleachers
-
Retaliation
The university responded to a simple protest against the war on fun by suspending the Stanford Tree. Nothing screams fun like a suspension!
